**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new life phase felt daunting. Looking back, I recognize a year filled not just with obstacles but also rich in personal development, self-realization, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was the thought of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might be grappling with similar concerns. I distinctly remember my first day in student housing—I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships of my life.
The secret? Taking that first step. It began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were feeling just as lost. Gradually, those exchanges evolved into friendships that resemble a second family. My tip? Be authentic. With such a variety of individuals at university, you’ll inevitably find those who resonate with your interests and principles. And if you’re not quite ready to jump in immediately, no worries—there are plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to help you transition into socializing.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level material was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by accomplished peers.
What proved most beneficial for me was reminding myself that I was not isolated in my experiences. If I found something confusing, others were likely feeling the same way. The most valuable lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of asking for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it is an essential step towards comprehension and progress.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
A standout feature of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science faculty. They genuinely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained an open dialogue with us, addressing issues and providing guidance.
I regret not taking advantage of the pastoral support earlier in the year, but it’s never too late. Assuming the role of a well-being representative was another significant step for me, and it proved to be extremely gratifying. It enabled me to forge relationships with staff members, which was invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal exchanges, getting to know the faculty is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit. My main takeaway? Don’t hesitate to make use of the resources and assistance available to you—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was unwarranted. A vast amount of support exists from both faculty and fellow students, and you’re never truly alone in your challenges. This year has shown me the importance of embracing difficulties, seeking help when necessary, and discovering joy even in the midst of exam pressures and deadlines.
As I anticipate the future, I’m eager to continue evolving, learning, and maximizing my time at Imperial. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, be genuine, and remember that support is always close at hand.
