**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and timid, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester officially kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. My friends here at Imperial have evolved into my second family, beginning with casual chats with individuals who were experiencing the same things I was.

What did I take away from this? Taking that crucial first step is always beneficial. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease initially, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic demands and complexity of university-level material was yet another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the change from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you see others studying and thriving.

What enabled me to persevere was the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance. This might be the most valuable takeaway from my first year—don’t hold back from asking your peers or faculty for help.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support personnel sincerely wish for students to succeed and understand the challenges we encounter. They keep communication lines open throughout the year and are always ready to assist.

I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the year’s outset, I took the plunge by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me foster connections with staff members. This was an invaluable experience, and I would encourage others to seize similar opportunities to engage with staff.

My greatest insight? Make use of the support systems at your disposal. Whether it involves academic assistance or pastoral care, there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and during the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support options from staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone.

I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of happiness and enjoyment. Most importantly, I’ve evolved as an individual, stepping beyond my comfort zone and seizing the opportunities presented by university life.

If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, understand that it’s normal to feel anxious. But also realize that with time, support, and the courage to take risks, you’ll discover your niche and flourish.
