**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I began my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into such a considerable life shift was overwhelming. Now, as I look back on the previous academic year, I recognize a journey rich with development, obstacles, and extraordinary moments of happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of entering university was the challenge of creating new friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you may have the same worry. On my initial day in student housing, I spent countless hours cooped up in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly declare that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life during this time.
The pivotal moment came when I committed to stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others who were just as unfamiliar with the situation as I was. Gradually, those interactions evolved into significant friendships, and I now truly consider Imperial my second family.
What did I learn? Taking that first brave step is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic requirements of university was yet another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when faced with such obstacles, particularly when observing others appearing to flourish.
What aided me during these times was recognizing that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. Everyone else was facing the same issues, and chances were, if I was confused about a topic, others were too. The essential takeaway here? Do not hesitate to seek help. Whether from fellow students or teaching staff, reaching out for assistance can significantly impact your experience.
### Cultivating Connections with Faculty
Speaking of support, one of the most remarkable aspects of my experience has been the fantastic staff in the Materials department. They truly care about student success and consistently show empathy towards the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and were proactive in addressing our needs.
I only began to fully utilize the pastoral support available towards the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I made a bold choice to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish strong bonds with faculty members. This experience was invaluable, and I encourage others to seize similar opportunities. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and support staff can greatly enhance your university journey.
### Essential Takeaways
Reflecting on the past year, I realize that the apprehension I felt—both before entering university and throughout my time here—was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance exam pressures and deadlines with joys and self-care.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a path of personal development, resilience, and exploration. If you are on the brink of your own university journey, remember: take the plunge, seek assistance, and embrace the opportunities that come your way.
