**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been introverted, plunging into university life felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize just how significant this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your foremost concerns too. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships of my life. My classmates have become like a second family to me, both within my program and throughout the university.
What made the difference? It commenced with small actions—initiating casual conversations with others who were just as new and unsure as I was. The essential lesson here is to take that leap of faith early. Even if you’re hesitant, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most critically, be true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was acclimatizing to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more marked. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achievers.
What aided me during this adjustment was recognizing that everyone else is in a similar position. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, others likely are as well. The best advice I can offer is to seek help—be it from your peers or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for assistance is perhaps the most crucial skill to hone during your inaugural year.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors truly desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we face. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year, addressing any worries we may express.
I didn’t make full use of the available pastoral support until the end of the year, and I wish I had acted sooner. Taking on the responsibility of a year well-being representative was one of the bold choices I made at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be an excellent decision. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on the year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced prior to beginning university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the abundant support available from both faculty and classmates, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone. This year has taught me how to navigate stressors like exams and deadlines while also relishing moments of joy and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of growth, perseverance, and connection. If you’re about to set off on your university journey, remember that while the challenges may appear formidable, the rewards are undeniably worthwhile.
