**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and doubt about what was to come. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging headlong into such a significant change seemed intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. Entering university can feel like a lot, and if you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely one of your main worries too. On my first day in student housing—just days prior to the start of term—I spent the entire day hiding in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have become akin to a second family for me, both within my coursework and throughout the university. What contributed to this success? Taking that first brave step. Even if you’re not feeling ready or comfortable at first, don’t fret—there will be plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to meet others.
The greatest lesson I absorbed? Be authentic. With such a varied group of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more rigorous. It’s simple to feel inundated or question your skills when you see others thriving.
What guided me through this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The essential step is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or academic staff. Learning to seek help may be the most vital skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they established open channels of communication and exhibited understanding of our challenges.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative early on enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with your lecturers and tutors, and cultivating those relationships can have a significant impact. My primary takeaway? Fully utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the broad spectrum of support options from both staff and peers, I was never truly isolated. I’ve acquired the ability to juggle stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I advance, I am thankful for the progress I’ve made and the relationships I’ve established. To anyone about to embark on their university journey: make the leap, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
