**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I contemplate the previous academic year, I recognize a journey characterized by personal development, challenges, and an abundance of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the prospect of forging new friendships. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, you might relate. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—friends who have stood by me through thick and thin. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others who shared my feelings.

What did I learn? First, it’s valuable to take that first step, even when it feels overwhelming. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Secondly, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you will inevitably find people who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the workload and the complexity of university-level material was yet another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more arduous. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and succeeding.

What aided me through this was the understanding that we are all facing similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that your peers are experiencing the same issues. The critical takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. This is perhaps the most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

In discussing support, the staff within the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and are compassionate regarding the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open lines of communication with us, attending to our concerns and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support resources until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to serve as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Make the most of the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was frequently unfounded. With the ample support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness and fun.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing experience. It’s been a journey of growth, perseverance, and connection, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I continue my education in Materials Science and Engineering.
