**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introspective, diving into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, upon reflection, I recognize that this academic year was filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments. But what lessons have I gleaned from this journey, and what is my current perspective?

### Confronting the Challenge of Building Friendships

One of the most anxiety-inducing parts of commencing university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day at student housing, just before the semester officially started, I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life.

The individuals I’ve met here at Imperial, within my course and beyond, have turned into a second family for me. It only required stepping outside of my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were also looking to connect. What have I come to understand? Taking that initial risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy at first, that’s completely fine! There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to get to know people.

Most importantly, I’ve learned to embrace my true self. With a diverse array of individuals across the university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Shift

Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Keeping up my confidence in such a demanding environment wasn’t always straightforward. At times, observing others study diligently led me to doubt my abilities.

What aided me in coping with these feelings was the acknowledgment that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I was struggling to understand something, it was likely that others were too. The main takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to peers or faculty, asking for help can truly make a difference.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully avail myself of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made the bold move to participate as a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to cultivate relationships with staff, and I highly encourage seizing these opportunities.

My main takeaway from this experience is to leverage the support systems that are available to you. Whether it’s for academic or personal matters, seeking help is always beneficial.

### Key Takeaways

In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced before and during my time at university was frequently unfounded. There are countless support systems available, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that it’s entirely possible to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.

Looking back, I can see how much I’ve matured in the past ten months. From overcoming my initial fears to cultivating meaningful friendships and addressing academic obstacles, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey.

If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that step, embrace the support around you, and remember to savor the experience!
