**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what precisely has this year revealed to me, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, it may be something that causes you unease as well. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I have ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was a little small talk with others who were equally hesitant.
So, what lessons did I glean? I came to realize that it’s always advantageous to take that plunge at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, worry not! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I understood that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another considerable challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was unmistakably a transition from A-levels, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more noticeable. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially upon witnessing others studying and feeling like you’re lagging behind. But here’s what supported me: reminding myself that everyone is navigating the same waters. If something confounds you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson I grasped in my first year—reach out to your classmates and faculty for help!
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, I cannot emphasize enough how incredible the professors in the Materials department are. They genuinely desire to see you flourish and are aware of the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, addressing our issues and providing assistance. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more meaningfully, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My key takeaway? Make full use of the support available to you—you can never have too much guidance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was mostly baseless. With the vast array of support options offered by both staff and fellow students, I realized that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I learned how to achieve a balance between having fun and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
