**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into university life felt like a formidable challenge. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what have I gained from this experience, and where do I find myself today?
### The Dilemma of Making Connections
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. This often stands out as one of the most daunting aspects of entering university, and if you’re a future student perusing this, it might be a concern for you as well. On my initial day of moving into accommodations, mere days prior to the term’s start, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and the key was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in small talk with peers who were experiencing similar sentiments. What did I glean from this? It’s always advantageous to take that jump at the onset of the year. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking occasions and avenues to connect with others. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are certain to encounter those who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Workload
Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic load and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a marked increase from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. Being immersed in this environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe peers studying and feel like you’re falling short.
What saw me through those moments of uncertainty was the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, there are likely others who are equally perplexed. Hence, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to internalize during your first year. Don’t hesitate to connect with your classmates or faculty when you require guidance.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the subject of faculty, the lecturers and tutors within the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter obstacles. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent dialogue with us, addressing our issues and providing support. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral resources available until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier.
At the year’s onset, I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish rapport with the faculty, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to foster relationships with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary insight from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the support available to you. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely unwarranted. With the diverse array of support options accessible from both faculty and fellow students, those feelings of doubt can be mitigated. I’ve learned that I am never truly isolated, and I’ve discovered how to have fun even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
