**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been rather shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase of my life felt daunting. Now, reflecting on my first academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, numerous challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Challenge

One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s probable you share similar concerns. On my first day in my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others who were feeling the same way.

So, what insights did I gather? I realized that taking that first step is essential. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable initially, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is vital. With so many diverse individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Difficulties

Another key challenge was adapting to the workload and the escalated complexity of the material. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can take a toll on your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re falling short. However, here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same situation. If you find something unclear, chances are that others are finding it difficult as well. The secret is to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson I’ve acquired during my first year—don’t hesitate to turn to your classmates and faculty for help.

### The Significance of Faculty Support

Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about your success and recognize the obstacles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept up regular communication with us, addressing our worries and providing assistance. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had sought it out earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff on a deeper level, which has proven to be immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with the faculty, and I strongly encourage doing so. My primary takeaway from this experience is to leverage the support available to you—you can never have too much help!

### Concluding Remarks

All in all, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt, both leading up to and during my time at university, was largely unwarranted. There are abundant support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, that can help alleviate those fears. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve uncovered how to strike a balance between enjoying myself and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
