**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Plunging into unfamiliar territory wasn’t my usual approach, as I tend to be naturally shy and reserved. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period brimming with personal development, challenges, and an abundance of enjoyment. So what exactly have I gleaned from this experience, and where do I stand now?
### Making Connections: A Formidable yet Fulfilling Challenge
One of the most daunting tasks I confronted was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your foremost worries. On the first day of moving into my residence, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, commencing with casual conversations with individuals who shared my initial apprehensions.
So, what did I discover? I recognized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. Most critically, be authentic. With such a diverse range of people across the department and university, you’re certain to uncover those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Workload: A Steep Learning Journey
Another challenge I had to navigate was the workload and the complexity of the topics. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and an even more significant transition from the first to the second term. Being immersed in such an environment can affect your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short.
What aided me through this was the reassurance that everyone is grappling with similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely others are too. The primary lesson here is to request assistance. This might be the most crucial thing to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to obtain support from peers and faculty!
### The Significance of Support: Faculty and Wellness Care
Speaking of faculty, the staff in the Materials department is outstanding. They sincerely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the hurdles students encounter. They maintain an open line of communication with us throughout the year, addressing any concerns we may possess. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the onset of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role provided me the opportunity to connect more deeply with the staff, which was invaluable. There are various ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway from this is to maximize the assistance available to you—you can never have excessive support!
### Concluding Thoughts: Overcoming Apprehension and Embracing University Life
In summary, this year has enlightened me that the anxious emotions I experienced before and during university were often unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I discovered I was never solitary. I also learned how to balance enjoying myself while managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
By welcoming the challenges and opportunities that presented themselves, I’ve evolved both academically and personally. If you are on the brink of starting your own university experience, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous—but also recognize that you possess the ability to conquer those fears and flourish in this new phase of your life.
