**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, trepidation, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, immersing myself into such an unfamiliar situation was not something I was used to. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what did this year truly teach me, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all commenced with a little small talk with individuals who were in a similar situation.

So, what lesson did I take away? I realized that taking that first leap is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel ready or at ease right from the start, don’t fret—there will be abundant ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I came to understand that authenticity is essential. With such a varied group of individuals in the program and university, you’re certain to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another major obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and the jump from the initial term to the second was even more significant. Being thrust into this setting can shake your confidence, especially seeing others study and beginning to doubt your own capabilities. However, one thing that propelled me forward was the realization that everyone is navigating the same experience. If something is unclear, chances are many others feel similarly.

The key insight I gained in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out when you’re facing challenges. This straightforward action can significantly impact your experience.

### Assistance from the Faculty

Regarding faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been outstanding. The staff truly want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They maintain continual communication with us throughout the year and are always sympathetic to our issues. I didn’t fully tap into the welfare support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to acquaint myself better with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous ways to foster connections with faculty, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these opportunities. My major takeaway is to fully embrace the support that is available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Reflections

In conclusion, this year has enlightened me that the nervousness I experienced before commencing university, and even throughout the year, was often baseless. The extensive support offered by both staff and fellow students can alleviate those worries. I have learned that I am never truly isolated, and I’ve figured out how to balance enjoying university life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
