**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and doubts about what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a fresh student at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into university life was an intimidating challenge. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the earliest and most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. For numerous new students, this aspect of university life can be particularly anxiety-inducing. If you’re a prospective student reading this, this concern may resonate with you as well. On my first day moving into my residence, just prior to the official start of the term, I spent the entire day retreating to my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it merely required me to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in casual conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings. What did I take away from this? I realized that taking that initial plunge at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and events tailored to help you connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are bound to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Workload
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a stark increase compared to A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even more burdensome. Being immersed in such an intense educational atmosphere can occasionally undermine your self-confidence. You might glance around and feel as though others are managing more effectively than you or that you fall short.
What aided me in overcoming those moments of uncertainty was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are grappling with the same content. The most vital lesson I absorbed throughout my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or academic staff, don’t hesitate to reach out when you’re feeling lost.
### The Significance of Staff Support
This leads me to my next observation: the exceptional support from the staff within the Materials department. They sincerely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter hurdles. Throughout the year, the staff engaged in open dialogues with us, addressing our worries and providing direction. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the year’s commencement, I made the bold choice to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to cultivate a stronger rapport with the staff, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to maximize the available support. You can never have too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I initially felt before embarking on university life—and even during the academic year—was frequently misplaced. An abundance of support systems exists, from staff to fellow students, which can assist you in managing any difficulties. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to balance having fun with the unavoidable pressure of exams and deadlines.
