**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unknown felt incredibly intimidating. Now, as I reflect on my first academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, trials, and, above all, enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. This aspect often looms large for those starting university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share the same concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to the present, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life, both within my program and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with simple conversations and connecting with others who were navigating similar experiences.

So, what have I gleaned from this? I realized that taking that first step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, I understood that being authentic is paramount. With a myriad of diverse personalities and backgrounds at university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Leap

Another major challenge was adapting to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a clear leap from A-levels, and the shift from the initial term to the second proved to be even more testing. Being thrust into this new environment can sometimes shake your self-assurance, especially when observing others study while feeling as though you’re falling short. However, here’s the truth: everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The best advice I can offer is to seek assistance. Developing this skill in your first year is perhaps the most critical; don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates or the faculty.

### The Value of Staff Support

Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and are acutely aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, demonstrating empathy and understanding. I didn’t take full advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had sought it out earlier.

At the start of the academic year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff on a deeper level, which turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly impact your experience. My most important takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the support that is accessible. You can never have too much help!

### Final Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was mostly unfounded. With the abundant support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I discovered that I was never alone in my challenges. More importantly, I learned how to balance having a good time with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
