**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been shy and introspective, stepping out of my comfort zone was quite a challenge. Reflecting on the past academic year, however, I view it as a time of personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student going through similar feelings, you’re not alone. I vividly recall my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of the term. I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I’m proud to say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like family.
What did I glean from this? I discovered that taking that first step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or comfortable at the beginning, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others. Most crucially, be yourself. With so many diverse personalities throughout the course and campus, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more marked. Being suddenly immersed in this atmosphere can impact your confidence, particularly when you see others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me during this period was recognizing that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something confounds you, it’s likely that others are facing difficulties too. The most vital lesson I absorbed in my first year was to seek help—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hold back from reaching out!
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The staff genuinely want us to excel and are fully aware of the hurdles students encounter. They keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year and are readily available to address our worries. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had explored that option earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty more intimately, which has been invaluable. There are abundant opportunities to establish connections with staff, and this is one of the best things you can do for your well-being. My main takeaway here is to fully utilize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely baseless. There are numerous support networks, from staff to fellow students, ready to help alleviate those anxieties. I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone and I’ve learned how to enjoy my time while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
