**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my first-year journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. However, in hindsight, I can confidently assert that this academic year has fostered significant personal development, presented challenges, and delivered a lot of enjoyable moments. So, what have I discovered, and how do I feel now?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most daunting parts of entering university was the challenge of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, chances are it’s something on your mind as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire time tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet anyone. Now that some time has passed, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both within my course and throughout the university. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it took was a little small talk with others who were facing similar situations.
So, what’s the takeaway? I learned that taking that initial plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not quite ready or at ease from the start, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others will come your way. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is essential. Given the diversity of personalities in university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who click with you.
### Managing the Workload and Academic Struggles
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels was quite pronounced, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more substantial. Entering such an environment can occasionally undermine your confidence. You might observe classmates studying and feel inadequate. However, it’s crucial to remember: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are others are too.
The key lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, don’t think twice about asking for assistance. This simple step can significantly impact your academic journey.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the team in the Materials department is fantastic. They are genuinely invested in our success and comprehending the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept in touch with us, responding to our concerns and providing encouragement. I didn’t fully explore the pastoral support options available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s onset, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my group. This position allowed me to connect with the staff more effectively, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are various methods to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway is to fully leverage the support that is available. You can never overdo it when it comes to help!
### Concluding Insights
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during my university experience was largely exaggerated. With an extensive array of support accessible from both faculty and fellow students, you are never truly alone. I’ve also discovered how to navigate enjoying university life while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
