**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the upcoming journey. I was on the verge of beginning my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, plunging into this new phase felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect back, I can see a year rich with personal development, trials, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Friendships: The Primary Challenge
One of the most daunting components of beginning university was the task of making new friends. If you’re an upcoming student reading this, it might be a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into student housing, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, particularly within my department.
So, what insights did I gather? I came to understand that taking that first step is vital. If you’re not quite prepared to jump in immediately, that’s okay—there will be ample ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. The key takeaway? Stay authentic. With the diverse community at Imperial, you will likely encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Coping with the Workload and Academic Demands
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the greater complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-level studies to university life was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more striking. It’s easy to feel engulfed by the pressure and doubt your capabilities, particularly when witnessing peers who seem to have it all under control.
What aided me during these tough times was the acknowledgment that everyone is undergoing similar experiences. If you find yourself puzzled by a concept, rest assured that others are likely facing the same struggles. The essential approach is to seek help—be it from fellow students or teaching staff. This is likely the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance when necessary.
### The Value of Staff Support
On the topic of support, the faculty members in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire for students to flourish and are fully cognizant of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they established clear communication with us, responding to our concerns and providing guidance. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to form closer ties with the staff, which proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary insight? Don’t be reluctant to utilize the available resources—there’s no such thing as excessive support.
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive array of support provided by both staff and fellow students, those anxieties can be easily alleviated. I’ve learned that I’m never truly solitary and that it’s feasible to find joy even in the midst of exam pressures and deadlines.
