**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted, plunging into the unknown was not a familiar experience for me. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Making Connections: Conquering the Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share this concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the official term commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, feeling too shy to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships—companions who have become like an extended family.

What was my takeaway? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease immediately, that’s okay! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals within the course and university, you are sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Workload: A Challenging Transition

Another major obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the materials. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more substantial jump from the first to the second term. Being thrust into this atmosphere can be quite a confidence-shaker, especially when witnessing others diligently studying and feeling as though you’re falling short.

What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone experiences similar feelings. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are too. The most vital lesson I took away in my first year was to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out!

### Assistance from the Faculty: An Essential Resource

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how supportive the Materials department staff are. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter various challenges. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our inquiries and extending their support.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me connect more with the staff. Fostering relationships with faculty members is incredibly beneficial, and there are numerous avenues to achieve this. My key message? Utilize the support that’s accessible to you—one can never have an excess of assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Path Ahead

In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was largely misplaced. With the extensive range of support systems offered by staff and fellow students, I realized that I was never truly alone. I also learned how to balance enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I set my sights on the upcoming academic year, I feel more assured, prepared, and eager for the experiences that await. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university adventure, keep in mind: take that leap, ask for help, and embrace your true self. You can do this!
