**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been timid and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of joy! So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you may share the same concern. On my first day of moving into my residence, mere days before classes began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently express that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was a smattering of casual conversation with those who were in a similar situation.
So, what did I glean? I understood that taking a bold step at the year’s onset is invariably rewarding. If you’re feeling somewhat unprepared or shy, fret not—numerous ice-breaker gatherings and chances to connect with others will present themselves. Most crucially, I discovered that being authentic is the most effective strategy. With such a variety of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Load and Challenges
Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the academic load and the complexity of the coursework. There was undoubtedly a marked increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in this kind of environment can occasionally shake one’s confidence, particularly when you observe peers studying and feel as though you’re falling short. However, here’s the reality: everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well.
The key lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for guidance. You’re not expected to have all the answers, and seeking assistance is an essential part of the educational journey.
### The Supportive Faculty in Materials Science
This leads me to my next point: the faculty in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter obstacles. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and were consistently understanding of our concerns. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the year wrapped up, and I wish I had engaged with it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a significant step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff on a deeper level, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues for establishing rapport with the faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant insight here is to fully utilize the support available to you—there truly is no such thing as too much assistance!
### Final Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the trepidation I felt before embarking on university, and even throughout the year, was largely unwarranted. With extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, I realized that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I discovered how to strike a balance between having fun and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
By welcoming the challenges and support systems around me, I’ve evolved both academically and personally. If you’re about to start your own university adventure, remember: take the plunge, ask for assistance, and remain true to yourself. You’ll find your path, just as I did.
