**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by feelings of anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been somewhat shy and reserved, leaping into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what precisely have I absorbed, and what is my current stance?
### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most intimidating elements of commencing university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely something weighing on your mind as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had during my time at Imperial. I’ve discovered a second family, both within the institution and my course.
What did I take away from this? Taking that first step is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not—there will be a myriad of ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. And above all, just be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re certain to locate individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Difficulties
Another major obstacle was adapting to the heightened workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more formidable. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your skills when observing others engrossed in their studies. But here’s a pivotal insight I gained: everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something is unclear, there’s a good chance others are grappling with it too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This is arguably the most essential ability to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely want students to thrive and are acutely aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, exhibiting understanding and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral assistance available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner.
At the start of the year, I ventured out of my comfort zone by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty on a deeper level, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My primary lesson? Make the most of the support provided—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, my first year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced, both prior to and during university, was largely misplaced. An abundance of support is readily available, whether from staff or fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I’m never entirely alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
