**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new environment felt intimidating. However, in hindsight, I recognize an academic year that was rich with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may share this concern. On the first day of moving into my residence, just days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with some casual conversation with fellow students facing similar situations.
What did I glean from this? I discovered that making that first move is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities designed to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals present in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Workload
Another major challenge I encountered was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the materials. The increase in difficulty from A-levels was undeniable, with an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence. You might glance around and feel as though others are advancing faster than you, but remember, everyone is navigating their own journey. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are struggling with it as well.
The key insight here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is probably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, asking for help is essential for your success.
### The Value of Faculty Support
On the topic of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us and were always willing to resolve our issues. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a brave step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This experience allowed me to foster closer relationships with the faculty, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with the professors, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support that is available to you. You can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I faced before and during university was mostly unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, both from faculty and fellow students, to help alleviate those worries. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to enjoy myself even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
