**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty about the journey that awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I can acknowledge it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what specifically did this year impart to me, and where do I stand now?
### Cultivating Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of beginning university was forming friendships. For those potential students out there, this might be a concern of yours as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time in my room, too shy to step out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here at Imperial, particularly in my program, have become like a second family.
So, what insight did I gain? I discovered that taking a leap of faith early on is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking events and chances to meet others in similar circumstances. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse population at the university, there’s a good chance you’ll connect with those who share your interests and values.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. Being immersed in this academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me was the understanding that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If a concept eludes you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year was to seek assistance. Whether from fellow students or faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out. It’s an essential skill that will greatly enhance your university experience.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been remarkable. The professors and mentors truly want you to thrive, recognizing the trials students encounter. They uphold open communication throughout the year, addressing any concerns we might have. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had done so sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty more deeply, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly encourage seizing these opportunities. My key takeaway from this experience is that you should never hesitate to utilize the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and throughout university was mostly unfounded. The plethora of support options, from both faculty and peers, has made a significant impact. I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned to enjoy life while managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
