**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I encountered a whirlwind of nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my first-year experience in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and introverted person, embracing this new chapter truly felt overwhelming. Looking back over the past academic year, I now recognize a time of substantial personal development, numerous challenges, and, above all, plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Forming Connections: Conquering the Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing obstacles I confronted was the need to forge friendships. This is a common concern among prospective students, and I was no different. On my first day moving into my accommodation, only a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all started with stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in small talk with others who were experiencing the same situation.
So, what did I take away from this? I came to understand that taking that crucial first step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to connect with those who share your values.
### Navigating the Academic Challenges
Another major hurdle was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the material. There was a marked transition from A-levels, and an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding academic atmosphere can sometimes challenge your self-esteem. You might observe others studying diligently and question your own abilities. However, a helpful reminder was understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely others are grappling with it too.
The key lesson I gleaned during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, reaching out for help is crucial.
### The Value of Staff Support
On the topic of staff, the backing from the Materials department has been outstanding. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in your success and are quite familiar with the difficulties students encounter. They empathize and keep communication channels open throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the academic year, but I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s start, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which has proven to be immensely helpful. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My greatest takeaway from this opportunity is to make the most of the support provided—you can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Experience
In summary, this past year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unfounded. Numerous support systems are in place, from staff to fellow students, eliminating the feeling of isolation. Additionally, I’ve learned how to enjoy myself while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
Reflecting on my journey, I take pride in how much I have achieved, and I am eager to discover what the next few years will bring.
