**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, diving into this experience was far from my comfort zone. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and how have I progressed?
### Making Connections: Surmounting the First Challenge
One of the most anxiety-inducing obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. For many individuals, this is one of the most intimidating aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both within my course and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with peers who were facing similar uncertainties.
So, what insight did I gain? I learned that taking that initial step is always worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease immediately, it’s perfectly alright! There are numerous social events and chances to mingle with others. Most crucially, I discovered the importance of being authentic. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re likely to connect with those who mirror your vibe.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another hurdle I faced was acclimating to the rigorous workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and even more starkly from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when witnessing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that it’s the same for others. The most valuable advice I can offer is to ask for assistance. This may very well be the most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
### Assistance from the Faculty: A Treasured Resource
On the topic of faculty, the support within the Materials department is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors truly want you to excel, and they recognize the challenges faced by students. They are understanding and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had made use of it sooner.
At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and this is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway from this opportunity is to fully utilize the available support—there’s no such thing as excessive assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was mostly unwarranted. With various support options from both the faculty and fellow students, I quickly recognized that I was never alone in my challenges. Most importantly, I figured out how to balance enjoyment with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
By embracing the trials and prospects that came my way, I’ve evolved both academically and personally. Looking ahead to the next phase of my university experience, I feel more assured and thrilled than ever.
