**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always felt shy and reserved, diving into this new phase seemed intimidating. However, reflecting now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may be a concern for you as well. It certainly was for me. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others who were feeling similarly.

What lesson did I take from this? It’s essential to take that first step. Even if you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with people. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to find those who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even steeper jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a challenging setting can unsettle your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind. However, here’s what aided me: recognizing that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it likely isn’t to others as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most crucial lesson I gleaned in my first year—don’t shy away from asking for help from your peers and faculty.

### The Significance of Faculty Support

Speaking of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing assistance. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not utilizing it sooner.

At the year’s start, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the faculty on a deeper level, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and this is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway here? Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly unfounded. With the multitude of support options from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also figured out how to balance having fun with the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.

In summary, my first year has been a journey filled with growth, learning, and forging enduring connections. If you’re about to begin your own university journey, remember to take that brave step, seek assistance, and above all, be true to yourself.
