**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty concerning what was to come. I was about to undertake my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new experience was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what exactly has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?

### Making Friends: The Initial Challenge

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re reading this and considering joining, you might be anxious about the same issue. I certainly was. On my first day settling into student housing, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can say with assurance that I’ve found some of the best companions I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.

So, what did I discover? I realized that taking that first step is always advantageous. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with people. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Workload

Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable progression from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second presented even greater challenges. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying rigorously. But here’s the truth: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding a topic difficult, chances are others are as well. The secret to overcoming this is straightforward—ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year. Whether it’s from classmates or the teaching faculty, don’t shy away from seeking help.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of support, I cannot emphasize enough how fantastic the personnel in the Materials department are. They sincerely wish for your success and are fully aware of the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier.

At the year’s outset, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to develop a closer relationship with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal. You can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Remarks

Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was largely unfounded. With the extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone. More crucially, I’ve learned how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines while savoring my time here.

If I could offer one piece of advice to newcomers, it would be this: take that plunge. Whether it’s forming friendships, seeking help, or engaging in new activities, the benefits are always worthwhile.
