**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, immersing myself in a new environment felt like a significant challenge. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge

One of the most stressful elements of starting university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be feeling the same way. On my first day in student accommodation, just before the semester kicked off, I spent all day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to report that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It only took a few friendly chats with individuals who were feeling as I was. The essential lesson I gleaned? Taking that initial plunge is always worthwhile. If you’re not ready or at ease, that’s okay! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to help facilitate connections with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find people who align with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Demands

Another obstacle I encountered was adapting to the rigorous workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. There was unmistakably a significant shift from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an intense setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.

What aided me in persevering was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others do as well. The most crucial lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.

### Encouragement from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge that students encounter obstacles. They keep in regular contact with us throughout the year and are always willing to discuss any concerns we might have.

I didn’t fully leverage the emotional support available until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to build rapport with the staff, which has proven to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and this is one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My most significant conclusion? Don’t hesitate to take advantage of the available support. There’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

All in all, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive support offered by both staff and peers, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly on my own. More importantly, I’ve learned how to enjoy my time while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
