**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into this new phase felt like a daunting challenge. Looking back at the previous academic year now, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and—most crucially—enjoyment. So, what did this year impart to me, and where do I currently find myself?

### Conquering the Fear of Establishing Friendships

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For many newcomers, this can be among the most intimidating aspects of beginning university life. If you’re reading this as a potential student, it might already be on your mind. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, especially within my program, I’ve found a second family. All it took was some casual conversation with others who shared my situation. So, what have I discovered? I realized that making that first move is always worthwhile. If you find yourself feeling unprepared or uneasy initially, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breakers and gatherings are designed to help you interact with others. Most importantly, I learned the significance of being your true self. With such a diverse population at the university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing the Academic Demands

Another key challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was distinctly noticeable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more dramatic. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic environment can sometimes unsettle your confidence. You might glance around and feel as though others are coping better than you, which can be discouraging.

What aided me through this was the realization that everyone faces similar struggles. If something confounds you, I can nearly assure you that others are battling with it too. This is why seeking help is imperative—whether from your classmates or the instructional staff. Learning to request assistance is likely the most essential lesson I took away from my first year.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the subject of staff, the instructors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and recognize that students will encounter difficulties. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were consistently understanding of our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support available until the year was nearing its end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to build rapport with the faculty, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university life. My primary takeaway here is to fully utilize the support that’s at your disposal. You can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was mostly unfounded. With the extensive range of support available, from staff to fellow students, there is always someone ready to help. I’ve realized that I am never truly isolated, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between having fun and navigating the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
