**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was awash with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, diving into the unknown was an entirely different experience from my comfort zone. However, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and an abundance of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, you might have similar concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships in my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, kicking off my journey with casual chatter with others in the same position.

What lesson emerged from this? I learned that taking the first step is essential. If you’re not quite ready or at ease initially, fret not—there will be ample ice-breaking occasions and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. Given the diverse mix of people throughout the course and university, you’re destined to connect with those who resonate with you.

### Confronting the Academic Load and Challenges

Another notable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, with an even larger jump from the first semester to the second. It’s simple to feel inundated and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying diligently. Nevertheless, I found solace in the reminder that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others are also grappling with it.

The most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether you turn to classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Everyone is here to lend support, and reaching out signifies strength, not frailty.

### The Significance of Staff Support

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely want you to thrive and fully understand the hurdles that students confront. Throughout the academic year, they kept in regular touch with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to establish better connections with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway from this experience is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have an excess of help!

### Concluding Remarks

This year has demonstrated to me that the apprehensions I experienced prior to and during university were largely unwarranted. With the plethora of support options present from both staff and fellow students, that sense of uncertainty can be alleviated. I’ve learned that I am never genuinely alone, and I’ve discerned how to balance my enjoyment with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
