**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this new experience felt intimidating. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gathered, and where do I stand now?

### Making Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most anxiety-inducing parts of commencing university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On moving day, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to go out and mingle with others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve built some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small talk with others who were equally apprehensive.

So, what has this taught me? I’ve learned that taking that initial leap at the year’s start is absolutely worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities created to facilitate interaction with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse community within the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Obstacles

Another substantial challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels was certainly noticeable, and there was an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a demanding environment can sometimes lead to self-doubt, particularly when seeing others study and feeling like you’re lagging. Yet, one crucial takeaway for me was the realization that everyone experiences similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are grappling with it as well.

The most vital lesson I grasped in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Everyone is here to support you, and no inquiry is too trivial or unimportant.

### The Significance of Support and Faculty Interaction

On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are fully cognizant of the obstacles we encounter. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the academic year to tackle any challenges we might face. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This role helped me connect with the faculty more effectively, which has proven immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway here is to leverage the available support. You can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly without basis. The support systems available, both from faculty and fellow students, are more than sufficient to help navigate any difficulties. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and it’s feasible to savor university life, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
