**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been shy and introverted, plunging into such a new experience felt intimidating. Reflecting on it now, I realize that this year was filled with self-discovery, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights did I gain from this whirlwind year, and where do I currently stand?

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is a common concern for many incoming students, and I was no exception. On my inaugural day in student housing, just before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve made some wonderful friends. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was a bit of casual conversation with others who felt just as apprehensive as I did.

So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, there’s no need for concern—there will be countless ice-breaker activities and events to facilitate introductions. Most crucially, I discovered that being authentic is essential. Among the diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who truly connect with you.

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable increase in intensity compared to A-level studies, and the leap between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a demanding atmosphere can definitely shake your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and worry that you’re lagging behind. However, one thing that reassured me was remembering that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, chances are others are grappling with it too. The most vital lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or instructors.

On the topic of staff, I cannot emphasize enough how incredible the Materials department is. The professors and support team genuinely care about our success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing assistance. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not taking advantage of it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your experience. My main piece of advice is to make the most of the support that is available—there’s always room for more assistance.

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. There is an abundance of support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, that can help alleviate those worries. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance enjoying my time with the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
