**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase was daunting. Now, as I contemplate the past academic year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what have I learned this year, and what is my current status?
### Making Connections: Conquering the Initial Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing components of starting university was making connections. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s probably something that concerns you as well. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, far too nervous to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced here at Imperial. I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and throughout the university.
What did I gain from this experience? I realized that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is invariably worthwhile. Even when you might not feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress—there will be ample ice-breakers and events tailored to help you connect with others. Most crucially, I learned that being authentic is essential. With a diverse array of people at university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a clear transition from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a rigorous environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when you observe peers studying and feel as though you’re not keeping pace.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, there’s a strong likelihood that others are encountering difficulties as well. The most vital lesson I took away in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from your classmates or faculty members, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance when you find yourself in need.
### Guidance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the teachers in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge that students often face obstacles. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources available until later in the year, but I wish I had done so much earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This opportunity allowed me to build closer relationships with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the feelings of anxiety I experienced, both before and during university, were mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support available from staff and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone. More significantly, I’ve figured out how to balance having fun with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
