**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar felt overwhelming. Yet now, reflecting on the past year, I see a journey marked by personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was forming friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, it might be a significant concern for you as well. On my first day moving into my residence, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all initiated by light conversations with individuals who shared my situation.

What have I learned from this experience? I realized that making that crucial first move is essential. Even when you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse student body at the university, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Load and Challenges

Another major obstacle was acclimating to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, with an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. In such a setting, it’s easy to feel daunted, especially when witnessing others studying and beginning to doubt your own competency. However, I found solace in the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If a concept eludes you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The essential message? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This was perhaps the most vital lesson I gleaned during my first year—reach out to your classmates and instructors whenever you require help.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, I cannot emphasize enough the extent of support provided by the Materials department. The professors and staff are genuinely invested in your success and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. They maintain consistent engagement with us throughout the academic year, addressing any challenges we may experience. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until later in the year, I wish I had sought help earlier.

At the year’s onset, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to better connect with the staff, which proved incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxieties I felt before and during university were often misplaced. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly alone. Most crucially, I found a way to balance having a good time alongside managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
