**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Dipping into the deep end was something my previously timid and reserved self had never experienced. Reflecting on the year now reveals a journey marked by personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained from this experience, and where do I currently find myself?

### Conquering Friendship Anxiety

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was the pursuit of friendships. This often stands as one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may be a concern for you as well. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a handful of days prior to the term officially starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, feeling too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships at Imperial, particularly within my course. I’ve discovered a second family, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with others in similar situations.

So, what knowledge did I acquire? I learned that making an effort at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breakers and chances to interact with others. Most crucially, I discovered the importance of being your true self. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Managing the Academic Demands

Another major challenge I faced was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when observing others study and feeling like you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are equally perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most valuable lesson I learned during my first year—seek support from your classmates or the faculty without hesitation.

### Assistance from the Faculty

Regarding the faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are outstanding. They truly want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students face. Throughout the year, they consistently communicated with us about any challenges we were encountering. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the onset of the year, I made a bold decision to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to establish better connections with the faculty, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty members, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit. My key takeaway from this experience is to fully utilize the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings I experienced prior to and during university were largely unwarranted. With the broad array of support options provided by both faculty and fellow students, those feelings can indeed be alleviated. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to find enjoyment even amidst the strains of exams and deadlines.
