**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was consumed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, launching into university life felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered initially was connecting with others. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might be grappling with the same concern. I certainly was. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all it took was a little small talk with individuals sharing the same experiences.

So, what have I grasped? I discovered that taking a bold step at the year’s start is vital. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities designed to help you engage with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse crowd across the course and the university, you’re bound to discover those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undeniably a marked increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can shake your self-assurance, especially when observing peers studying and feeling like you’re falling short. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re grappling with understanding something, it’s likely that your classmates are too.

The best mantra I can share is to seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson I absorbed in my first year. Don’t shy away from reaching out to your classmates or faculty when you’re feeling lost. You’ll be amazed by how many people are ready to lend a hand.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty within the Materials department are remarkable. They truly aspire for your success and are keenly aware of the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier.

At the year’s outset, I made the decision to take a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to develop a stronger rapport with the faculty, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to nurture relationships with staff members, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here is to fully utilize the resources available to you. You can never overindulge in support!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I felt before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. There are abundant support systems instituted, from faculty to fellow students, that can help mitigate those worries. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned to navigate balancing enjoyment with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
