**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I readied myself to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Throwing myself into the unknown was a daunting prospect for my typically shy and introverted nature. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: A Formidable but Fulfilling Task
One of the earliest and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, chances are it’s a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all starting from casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that it’s always best to take that leap at the start of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such a demanding setting can sometimes erode your confidence, especially when witnessing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind. However, here’s the truth: everyone is navigating similar waters. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance others are in the same position. Thus, seek assistance. This has been perhaps the most crucial lesson I’ve learned in my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out for help from your peers and faculty.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
On the topic of faculty, I must stress just how remarkable the Materials department is. The lecturers and support personnel are genuinely invested in your success and are well aware of the hurdles students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing guidance. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I really wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the staff more closely, which was immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own success. My key takeaway here is to fully exploit the support that is accessible to you. You can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting back, this year has illustrated to me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during university—was largely unjustified. With the multitude of support options available from both faculty and fellow students, I recognized I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to navigate the balance between having fun and tackling the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
In summary, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
