**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was about to set off on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted and reserved, diving into the deep end of university life felt like an intimidating challenge. Now, reflecting on this academic year, I recognize it has been a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided me, and where do I currently find myself?
### Making Connections: A Scary Yet Fulfilling Task
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I confronted was forming friendships. This is a concern for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, far too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can wholeheartedly affirm that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like an additional family.
What did I glean from this experience? I discovered that taking that first jump of faith is essential. Even if you’re not completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to interact will be available. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re likely to find others who align with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Workload: A Steep Learning Journey
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a distinct leap from A-levels, which became even more pronounced from the first to the second terms. Being thrust into this setting can be taxing on your self-confidence, especially when you witness others studying and begin to question your own capabilities.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, chances are there are others grappling with the same issue. The crucial lesson I learned during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from colleagues or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out when you’re in need.
### Support from the Faculty: Don’t Hold Back from Asking for Help
This leads me to my next observation: the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely wish for your success and comprehend that students frequently encounter difficulties. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, responding to our concerns and providing assistance.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I took a significant step by becoming a well-being representative for my class. This role enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My main takeaway here is to leverage the support provided to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Final Reflections: Surmounting Anxiety and Embracing University Life
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support options accessible from both faculty and fellow students, I quickly realized that I was never isolated. I also learned how to balance enjoyment with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
Looking back, I take pride in how much I have grown, and I eagerly anticipate what the future brings as I proceed on my path in Materials Science and Engineering.
