**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been reserved and shy, plunging into this new chapter felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been a time of significant personal development, challenges, and, most importantly, enjoyment. But what exactly did I gain from this experience, and what’s my status now?
### Forming Friendships: Conquering the Initial Challenge
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was making new friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you may resonate with that apprehension. On my first day at student housing, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a little small talk with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was.
So, what did I take away from this? Taking that initial step is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, fear not—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a wide array of students in the course and at the university, you’re sure to encounter people who align with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Academic Demands
A further considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a stark transition from A-levels, and an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities, especially when you observe peers studying intensely. But here’s the truth: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely others are as well. The crucial part is to reach out for help—be it from your classmates or the teaching staff. This is perhaps the most pivotal lesson I gained in my first year.
### Encouragement from the Faculty
Regarding faculty, the professors in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly wish for your success and comprehend the hurdles students face. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us, responding to our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster better relationships with the staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your personal growth. My most significant lesson? Don’t hesitate to leverage the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely baseless. With the backing of staff and fellow students, those feelings can be managed and conquered. I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance pleasure with the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
