**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and reserved, plunging into university life felt like a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on the academic year, I recognize it as a time replete with personal development, obstacles, and, most importantly, enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered at the outset of university was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this can be one of the most daunting parts of starting university life. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term began, I spent the full day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself to fellow students. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life, both in my program and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with peers who were also feeling apprehensive.

What did I glean from this experience? Taking that crucial first step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others will arise. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a wide array of diverse individuals in your course and the university, you’re bound to connect with those who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Workload and Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a clear escalation from A-levels and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can easily rattle your confidence, especially when you observe others studying diligently and feel as though you’re lagging behind. However, one thing that reassured me through this journey was the awareness that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are, many others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to glean in your first year—don’t shy away from seeking help from peers and faculty.

### The Significance of Support and Developing Connections with Staff

Speaking of faculty, I cannot emphasize enough how exceptional the Materials department is. The professors and support staff are genuinely invested in your success, and they comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They maintain open communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any issues we may encounter. I didn’t fully leverage the support systems available until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had recognized their value sooner.

At the year’s commencement, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position empowered me to connect more deeply with the staff, which proved to be immensely rewarding. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with faculty, and doing so can be one of the most beneficial actions you take for yourself. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support that’s available to you—there’s no such thing as excessive help!

### Concluding Reflections

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was mainly baseless. There are countless support systems established, from staff to fellow classmates, that facilitate the transition. I’ve come to realize that I am never truly isolated in my challenges, and I have also learned how to harmonize enjoying university life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
