**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase of my life felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most stressful challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your major concerns. On my first day of moving into the dorms, just a few days ahead of the term, I remained cooped up in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who have become like family.
What did I gather from this experience? I came to understand that taking the initiative at the year’s onset is vital. Even if you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others in similar situations. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse student population, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another substantial challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. This transition can be challenging for your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying diligently while feeling as though you’re lagging behind.
Nonetheless, one thing that aided me in this was the realization that we are all in the same situation. If you struggle with a concept, it’s likely that others do as well. The most significant lesson I gleaned during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out!
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the team within the Materials department is exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and fully recognize the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and consistently showed empathy towards our challenges.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had started earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the plunge by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more personally, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support accessible from both faculty and fellow students, I realized I am never genuinely alone. Most significantly, I learned how to manage the pressure from exams and deadlines while also savoring my university experience.
