**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in apprehension, dread, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the academic year gone by, I perceive a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely one of your biggest worries as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the most amazing friends I’ve ever had, both within my program and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with a little casual conversation with individuals who were equally anxious.

So, what did I gain from this experience? The secret lies in taking that first step at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel equipped or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. And most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse array of people at university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Load

Another considerable obstacle was adjusting to the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant leap from A-level studies, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re falling behind. But here’s the truth: everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are, others are too. So, don’t shy away from asking for assistance! This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I gleaned in my first year—don’t hesitate to seek help from both peers and faculty.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the team in the Materials department is phenomenal. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students face hurdles. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty better, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to forge connections with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit. My main takeaway from this experience is to capitalize on the assistance that’s offered to you. You can never have too much guidance!

### Concluding Reflections

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was mostly unfounded. With the vast array of support resources available from both faculty and fellow students, those feelings of anxiety can be alleviated. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve discovered how to juggle having fun with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
