**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering Studies**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, during October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and reserved, diving into the university experience felt like an intimidating challenge. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize how much I have developed, the obstacles I have surmounted, and the enjoyment I have experienced throughout. But what exactly has this year imparted on me, and how do I find myself at this moment?
### Building Friendships: Surmounting the Initial Barrier
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student perusing this, it’s probable that you share this concern. On my inaugural day settling into accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with brief conversations with individuals who were equally apprehensive.
What insight did I gain from this experience? It is essential to make that leap of faith at the start of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, fear not—there will be ample ice-breaker gatherings and chances to engage with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a variety of personalities across the course and campus, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.
### Academic Hurdles: Navigating the Workload
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even more substantial leap between the first and second terms. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence. You may observe others studying and feel inadequate. However, here’s the truth: everyone shares similar experiences. If a concept eludes you, others likely struggle with it too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most valuable lesson I absorbed in my first year—don’t hesitate to turn to your classmates and the staff for guidance.
### Guidance from Faculty: Don’t Hesitate to Connect
On the subject of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are phenomenal. They sincerely want to see you thrive and acknowledge the difficulties students encounter. They maintain regular communication with us throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the year’s outset, I bravely stepped into the role of a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to interact more with the staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty members, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My concluding thought? Seize every opportunity for support you are given—you can never have too much help!
### Concluding Reflections: Embracing the Experience
In summary, this year has illuminated the reality that the apprehension I felt before and during university was predominantly unwarranted. There exist numerous support systems—ranging from staff to fellow students—that alleviate those worries. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly isolated, and I’ve learned how to juggle having fun with the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
