**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my experience as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone with a naturally shy and reserved nature, immersing myself fully felt like an intimidating challenge. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable moments, I can contemplate what this past year has imparted and where I currently find myself.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might be worried about this as well. On my first day moving into my residence—just a few days prior to the beginning of term—I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast-forward to now, and I can confidently affirm that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships in my life, both within my course and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it merely required stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in small conversations with those facing similar apprehensions.
What did I learn? I discovered that taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, that’s completely fine! There are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most significantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of personalities and backgrounds across the university, you will inevitably encounter individuals who resonate with your own experience.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into this demanding atmosphere can sometimes undermine your self-assurance. You might observe others hitting the books and feel as if you’re lagging or inadequate. However, here’s the truth: everyone is navigating similar waters. If something isn’t clear, it’s likely that others are equally perplexed.
The most crucial lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help is essential. Don’t hesitate to pose questions—there’s nothing embarrassing about it!
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials Science department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize that students frequently encounter challenges. Throughout the year, they kept in consistent contact with us, addressing our issues and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources until the concluding part of the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the commencement of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty more deeply, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with the faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support from both staff and peers, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance the enjoyment of my experiences with the management of the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of personal development, academic trials, and unforgettable moments. If you’re about to embark on your own path, remember: take that leap, seek assistance, and above all, be true to yourself.
