**Choosing a Place to Live in London: My Journey and Takeaways**
*By Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*
Just nine months ago, I relocated to London, and although that might not appear as an extensive duration, I have gained considerable insight into life in this vibrant city. London is rich in diversity, both in its residents and in its various housing options. For students, the choices are plentiful, encompassing student accommodations, private rentals, ensuite and shared bathrooms, private and shared rooms, studio apartments, and house shares. While students residing in the UK can easily schedule in-person viewings, those from overseas can look into their options through online platforms like Rightmove, Zoopla, and SpareRoom. These websites offer information on facilities and nearby public transport, simplifying the search process.
### Selecting an Area
In my quest for a residence, I focused on securing a rental in Central London. I aimed to be near key attractions, lively social scenes, and, most importantly, the Imperial College campus. London is organized into six concentric zones, with zones one and two being the most central. The city’s extensive public transport system—including the Underground (Tube), buses, and trains—facilitates easy travel between zones. However, crossing zones can become pricey, costing up to £5.25 each day. To minimize expenses, I decided to walk shorter distances rather than rely on public transport. Luckily, Oyster card options help ease commuting costs for students.
In addition to the Tube, London Overground and National Rail services reach areas beyond the central zones, with fares depending on distance and rail companies. Although Central London provides the benefit of being near major sites, the cost of living is considerably higher. To keep expenses in check, I shared a room with a friend, allowing us to reduce rent. I also opted for intercollegiate student accommodation to connect with peers from varied backgrounds and similar age groups—a chance that can be more challenging to discover in private rentals.
### Access to Essentials
For me, being close to grocery stores was a vital consideration in selecting a location. Some of the most prevalent supermarkets in London include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op, while more budget-friendly options like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland provide alternatives. Having essential outlets such as grocery stores and pharmacies within reach is incredibly convenient, particularly during hectic times like exam periods.
### Discovering London’s Neighborhoods
Choosing a neighborhood in London can be difficult due to the city’s immense diversity. Many international students seek areas that resonate with the culture and familiarity of their native countries. For instance, Southall in West London has a significant South Asian presence, featuring Indian restaurants, grocery shops, and traditional apparel stores. Brixton, located in South London, is famed for its Afro-Caribbean heritage and lively music atmosphere. Chinatown, situated in the center of London’s West End, is a bustling area brimming with Chinese restaurants, shops, and cultural festivities. These represent just a few of the numerous cultural enclaves that contribute to London’s uniqueness.
### Concluding Thoughts
The ideal living situation in London varies based on your individual preferences and requirements. Whether you emphasize affordability, closeness to your university, or cultural resonance, there are numerous options available for exploration. Embracing London’s varied housing landscape, uncovering its vibrant neighborhoods, and relishing the thrill of city life render the experience truly unforgettable.
