### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was consumed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been shy and introverted, diving into this new experience felt daunting. Yet, reflecting on this past year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student, this may be something that concerns you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture outside and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to share that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could have hoped for. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all stemmed from a few straightforward conversations with others who were feeling just as I was.

So, what did I take away from this experience? Firstly, taking that pivotal step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t think you’re ready, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to help you bond with others. Secondly, being true to yourself is key. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Navigating Academic Challenges

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demanding workload and more complex subjects. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more challenging. There were moments when I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying and felt like I was falling behind.

What aided me during these times was the realization that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. If I found a concept difficult to grasp, it was likely that others were facing similar challenges. The crucial lesson here? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether from peers or instructors, seeking help is one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your initial year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most outstanding features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the remarkable support from the faculty. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they kept in close touch with us, ensuring our concerns were acknowledged.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the year’s start, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my course, which enabled me to forge strong connections with faculty members. Familiarizing yourself with your professors and support staff can be immensely rewarding, and many chances exist to do this. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much support.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I recognize that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university was mostly unwarranted. There are ample support systems available—both from faculty and fellow students—that ensure no one has to embark on this journey alone. More importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle academic pressures while savoring the university experience.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be reminiscing about an amazing year filled with learning, friendships, and personal growth.
