**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was coming next. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been more reserved and introverted, stepping into an entirely new environment felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and numerous enjoyable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

A major challenge I encountered at the outset was the task of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. I can vividly recall my first day in student housing—I spent the whole day confined to my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, here I am today, proud to say that I’ve found some of the best friends I could ask for. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it all started with engaging in a little small talk with others who were experiencing the same feelings.

What did I take away from this? Making that initial move is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t worry—there will be many icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you are likely to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Challenges

Another significant obstacle was getting used to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university proved substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more drastic. It’s easy to doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and believe you’re lagging behind.

What aided me was the realization that we’re all in this together. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that many others are grappling with the same issue. The most productive action you can take is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

An incredibly reassuring aspect of my program has been the outstanding support from the faculty. They genuinely care about students’ success and are receptive to feedback. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing direction.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of my best choices was to become a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be extraordinarily advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can make a significant difference in your university journey. My key lesson? Take full advantage of all available support—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of my initial anxieties were unfounded. The apprehension I experienced before commencing university and throughout the year was alleviated by the remarkable support from both faculty and fellow students. This year has shown me that I am never truly alone and that it is possible to juggle academic challenges while having a fulfilling university experience.

For anyone about to embark on their own university voyage—take that leap, seek help, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated.
