**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself consumed by nerves, uncertainty, and excitement as I set out on my first-year adventure in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always leaned towards being reserved, stepping into this new chapter was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most formidable obstacles I encountered at the outset of my university life was the quest to forge friendships. If you are an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, I felt so overwhelmed that I remained in my room the whole day, hesitant to reach out to anyone. However, as the year unfolded, I ended up surrounded by some of the most amazing friends I’ve ever had.
What did I discover? Taking that first step is always rewarding. Even if you’re uncertain, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others in your situation. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a varied student community, you’re likely to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Challenges
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened rigor of university-level coursework. The transition from A-levels was palpable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more demanding. At times, witnessing others study effectively led me to question my own capabilities.
What helped me navigate this? Reminding myself that everyone around me was experiencing similar struggles. If I found it difficult to grasp a concept, chances were high that others were too. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from peers or instructors. Requesting help is not an indication of weakness; it’s an essential skill that can significantly impact your success.
### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
One of the most comforting elements of my course has been the remarkable backing from the teaching staff. They genuinely wish to see students thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to foster strong relationships with staff members. This experience highlighted the advantages of engaging with faculty, whether through academic conversations or support services. My biggest lesson? Make the most of the resources available—there’s no such thing as excessive support!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that many of the apprehensions I held prior to starting university were unfounded. With the appropriate support from staff and fellow students, obstacles become much easier to tackle. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone in this journey. It is possible to balance academic demands with social interactions and personal care, and I feel more confident than ever as I move forward.
For those about to embark on their university journey—embrace the unpredictability, take risks, and remember that growth often occurs outside your comfort zone.
