**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding the journey ahead. Having always been somewhat introverted, immersing myself in a brand new environment felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. This might resonate with you if you’re a prospective student anxious about the same issue. I recall my first day in my new accommodation—I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting people that I spent the entire day sequestered in my room. However, as I reflect today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Imperial has become a second family to me, and it all started with stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in brief conversations with others in similar situations.
What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be a myriad of ice-breaking activities and chances to build connections. Most crucially, I learned that the most important thing is to be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another substantial challenge was acclimatizing to the workload and the elevated complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was notable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more formidable. At times, I questioned my competencies, especially when observing my peers study and feeling like I was lagging behind.
What aided me during this time? The reminder that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I had trouble grasping a concept, it was likely that others were experiencing the same difficulties. The essential lesson here is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to reach out for help is one of the most invaluable skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
One aspect that truly impressed me this year was the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff are genuinely invested in students’ success and are always willing to engage in discussions about any obstacles we encounter. They understand our challenges and keep lines of communication open to ensure we have access to necessary resources.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the provided pastoral support until the year drew to a close, but I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish solid relationships with staff members. Getting acquainted with your professors and support personnel can be extremely beneficial, and there are numerous ways to achieve this. My most significant lesson? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I now understand that many of the anxieties I held before starting university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support, both from staff and fellow students, to help navigate the complexities of university life. Perhaps most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and it is feasible to juggle academic demands while enjoying a rewarding student experience.
