**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been shy and introverted, diving into this new phase felt daunting. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the greatest hurdles I confronted initially was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your foremost worries as well. On my first day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of social interactions that I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room. Yet, as the weeks unfolded, I gradually ventured out of my safe space, initiating conversations with other students who were experiencing similar feelings.
Now, I am proud to say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial feels like a second home, and the individuals I’ve encountered resonate as family. The crucial takeaway? Step out early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be true to yourself—Imperial is rich in diversity, and you’re sure to connect with those who share your interests.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and heightened complexity of university-level studies. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others diligently studying.
What aided me was the realization that we are all navigating similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, likely, others are grappling with it too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or instructors. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s a crucial skill that will lead to your success.
### The Value of Finding Help
One of the most significant elements of my journey has been the incredible assistance from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely care about student welfare and academic achievement. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and keep lines of communication open throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to develop bonds with staff members. Building relationships with your professors and support staff can be immensely advantageous, and I urge every student to fully engage with the resources at their disposal. You can never receive too much support!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that many of the concerns I held before starting university were unwarranted. There are abundant support systems—both from staff and fellow students—to assist you in overcoming challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I am never truly alone.
Despite the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines, I have discovered ways to relish my university experience. If you’re on the brink of starting your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: welcome the challenges, seek help when needed, and seize every opportunity for personal growth.
Imperial has provided me with a phenomenal first year, and I am eagerly anticipating what the future has in store!
