### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university, and venturing into the unknown was intimidating for someone like me, who has always leaned towards being more reserved. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, overcoming challenges, and creating cherished memories. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the primary obstacles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re considering university, this might be a primary anxiety for you as well. I recall arriving at my accommodation a few days before classes commenced and spending an entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Now, looking back, I can assertively claim that I’ve cultivated some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve met here feel like a second family. All it took was stepping outside of my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others who were experiencing similar situations.
So, what insights have I gained? First and foremost, it’s essential to take that first plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared, you will find ample ice-breaking events and occasions to meet others. Secondly, the key is to be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re bound to encounter those who align with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting used to the academic load and the heightened difficulty of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. At times, it was easy to feel inundated, particularly when I contrasted myself with peers who seemed to have it all under control.
What aided me during this period was the recognition that we were all navigating similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, chances were that others were grappling with it, too. The most beneficial action I took was reaching out for help—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek assistance is one of the most essential skills you can foster in your first year.
#### The Value of Seeking Assistance
In relation to support, something that really stood out to me was the remarkable dedication of the faculty within the Materials department. They are genuinely invested in the success of their students and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, ensuring our concerns were acknowledged.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the academic year, but I wish I had done so at the outset. Early on, I seized the opportunity to become a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can profoundly impact your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support that’s offered—you can never receive too much help.
#### Concluding Thoughts
Upon reflection, this year has illuminated that the fears and worries I harbored before starting university were largely baseless. With appropriate support from both staff and peers, those anxieties became surmountable. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic responsibilities with enjoying the university experience.
If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that initial leap, seek assistance when necessary, and embrace the journey. You’ll grow in ways you never anticipated.
